Detoxify for Healthier Living

Spring is a great time to do a detox, to clear out the remains of the winter.  Autumn is also a great time to ease the heat or inflammation caused during the summer.

There are many ways to flush away harmful toxins, from simply drinking more pure still water to more extreme methods such as fasting.  (Fasting is not recommended except under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner).  Toxicity is more of a concern today than ever before.  Pollutants, the majority of which are present without us being aware of them, are bombarding our bodies on a daily basis.  Gone are the days of thick dense smog, however, the newer pollutants are probably more dangerous; air and water are affected from pollution, radiation, chemicals, drugs, (pharmaceutical as well as recreational).  Refined foods and also our daily intake of stimulants, sugar, and sedatives have increased manifold in the past years.

Toxic diseases have increased also, cancer, and cardiovascular disease being two of the most serious, with arthritis, allergies, obesity and skin problems being less serious yet still hampering ones enjoyment of life.  Symptoms that can be related to toxicity are headaches, pain, coughs, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, and a lowered immune system.

Toxins can be breathed in or ingested through the mouth or absorbed through the skin.  It is quite common for our bodies to contain foreign bacteria, yeast and parasites, and our body if healthy should keep these under control.  However, if our body is under stress from too many toxins, these microbes can breed and multiply very quickly causing imbalances to occur.  Toxins can also be known as free radicals and can irritate, inflame, age and cause degeneration of body tissues.  Toxicity occurs when we take in more than we can utilize and eliminate, thus the balance of the body is then disturbed.

As well as what is either inhaled or ingested there is another form of toxin open to us - our emotions.  Negative thought patterns and emotions can stress and change the normal physiology of the body.

Detoxification is part of transformational medicine that can bring about change on every level.  When our body is freed from its toxic overload it feels lighter, really able to experience the moment and able to look brightly towards the furure.  This is a very important factor and one that is often overlooked by many people.

There are various detoxification systems in our body, namely:

Respiratory:        Lungs, bronchial tubes, throat, sinuses, & nose

Gastrointestinal:  Liver, gall bladder & colon

Urinary:              Kidneys, bladder & urethra

Skin:                  Sweat & sebaceous glands and tears

Lymphatic:          Lymph channels, and lymph nodes

Mental:               Uncover & express feelings, eg. fear, anger, grief.

Our body's natural way of handling toxins is done through neutralizing, transforming or eliminating them.

It is equally important not to over eliminate as can happen with overuse of fasting, laxatives, enemas, colonics, diuretics, and even exercise.  This is not to say these are bad when used gently and appropriately, however, some people may get as hooked on them as they were on the toxins.

At Down To Earth Health, only a very light detox would be recommended during peak summer and winter months and a deeper detox tailored (if relevant for clients) during Spring and Autumn and may include increased water intake, supplements, castor oil packs, skin rubs, teas and other techniques.
